Mercedes-Benz Launches CLE Cabriolet and CLE53 Coupe in Singapore

Mercedes-Benz has expanded its CLE lineup in Singapore, signaling a new era for the luxury car brand. Following the introduction of the CLE200 Coupe, Mercedes-Benz Singapore has unveiled two more models on August 22, 2024, to further captivate driving enthusiasts: the CLE200 Cabriolet and the high-performance Mercedes-AMG CLE53 Coupe.

Introducing the CLE200 Cabriolet: Open-Top Elegance

The CLE200 Cabriolet, the convertible sibling of the CLE200 Coupe, brings an exciting blend of sportiness and luxury, designed to deliver a distinctive wind-in-your-hair experience. Unlike the Coupe, the Cabriolet is available only in the AMG Line trim, enhancing its dynamic appearance with racier exterior styling and a host of premium features.

One standout feature is the Cabriolet Comfort Package, which incorporates the AIRCAP system with wind deflectors to reduce turbulence in the cabin and the AIRSCARF system that emits warm air from headrest vents to create a cozy ‘invisible scarf’ effect. Both features were previously exclusive add-ons in the E-Class and C-Class Cabriolets.

Given Singapore's hot climate, the CLE Cabriolet also comes equipped with specially-coated Nappa leather seats that can reduce seat temperatures by up to 12 degrees, providing comfort even under the scorching sun. Additionally, the 11.9-inch central infotainment display can be tilted electronically to mitigate sun glare when the roof is down. Despite being a soft-top, the CLE200 Cabriolet offers excellent sound insulation, thanks to its acoustically damped fabric roof.

Powered by a mild hybrid 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, the CLE200 Cabriolet delivers 201bhp and 320Nm of torque, aided by an integrated starter generator that boosts both efficiency and responsiveness. The model is also more spacious than the now-discontinued C-Class Cabriolet, boasting a longer wheelbase that provides more legroom, shoulder room, and elbow room for passengers.

The CLE53 Coupe: Where Performance Meets Precision

For those who desire more than just style, the CLE family also welcomes the Mercedes-AMG CLE53 Coupe, a model that pushes the boundaries of performance without compromising on elegance. This high-performance version features an AMG-specific grille and bumpers, flared fenders, and wider tracks both at the front (increased by 58mm) and rear (increased by 76mm), giving it a muscular stance. The aggressive look is further complemented by quad exhausts and 20-inch light-alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires.

Under the hood, the CLE53 Coupe is powered by a turbocharged straight-six engine that delivers 442bhp and 560Nm of torque. For an added boost, the engine also features a 12-second 'Overboost' mode, pushing torque to an impressive 600Nm. The 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system ensures dynamic handling, while the nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT transmission allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.2 seconds.

The engine is equipped with dual charging capabilities—a traditional exhaust turbocharger complemented by an electric auxiliary compressor—effectively eliminating turbo lag and ensuring a responsive drive throughout the rev range. Enhanced maneuverability is provided by the rear-axle steering system, while a sports suspension and high-performance brakes offer a thrilling driving experience.

For drivers seeking even more adrenaline, the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package includes a RACE driving mode with a ‘Drift Mode,’ typically reserved for top-tier AMG models.

Interior and Leadership Changes

Inside, the CLE53 Coupe continues to showcase AMG’s signature elements, such as a flat-bottomed AMG Performance steering wheel, sports seats upholstered in AMG Nappa leather, and dual displays with AMG-specific graphics.

At the launch event, Claudius Steinhoff, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Singapore, described the new models as “the definition of peak automotive engineering” and “enthralling two-door beauties.” Claudius also announced that these would be the last models introduced under his leadership in Singapore. Having served since October 2020, he played a crucial role in guiding the brand through the COVID-19 pandemic and expanding its electric vehicle lineup. Claudius is set to move to a new position as Executive Director and Co-CEO of Mercedes-Benz in South Africa, with his successor taking over in September 2024.

The new CLE Cabriolet and CLE53 Coupe models embody Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to innovation, luxury, and performance. With these new additions, the CLE family continues to blend the best of the C-Class and E-Class worlds, offering something for every driving enthusiast in Singapore.
