Green Vehicle Registration Plates for EVs and PHEVs in Singapore: What Drivers Need to Know

Electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in Singapore are set to become more visually identifiable, as authorities move towards introducing green-coloured vehicle registration plates.

The initiative, jointly announced by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), aims to enhance road safety and emergency response efficiency by distinguishing electrified vehicles from conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars.
New Green Licence Plate Scheme for EVs and PHEVs
Currently, Singapore vehicles use two standard registration plate formats:
White-on-black plates (white characters on a black background) for both front and rear
Black-on-white (front) and black-on-yellow (rear) plate combination
With the upcoming changes, a third licence plate colour scheme — green — will be introduced specifically for EVs and PHEVs.
This means fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will eventually adopt distinct green registration plates, making them easily recognisable on Singapore roads.
Which Vehicles Are Affected?
The new green plate scheme will apply to:
Fully electric vehicles (EVs)
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)
However, certain categories will not be affected:
Conventional hybrid vehicles (non plug-in) will continue using existing plate formats
Vehicles under special schemes with coloured plates (e.g. hazardous materials transport vehicles with orange plates) are exempted
While not explicitly mentioned, this may also extend to other schemes such as off-peak vehicles, which currently use red plates.
Why Green Plates? Enhancing Emergency Response
The primary objective of this initiative is to improve emergency response efficiency, particularly for incidents involving EVs and PHEVs.
Fires involving electrified vehicles present unique safety challenges compared to traditional petrol or diesel cars. According to the SCDF emergency response guidelines:
EV and PHEV fires involve high-voltage battery systems
There is an increased risk of electrocution
Fires can generate extreme heat due to battery reactions
The risk of thermal runaway (uncontrolled battery overheating) is significantly higher
By introducing distinct green registration plates, first responders such as firefighters can immediately identify the vehicle type, allowing them to take appropriate safety precautions without delay.
Faster Identification Could Save Lives
In emergency situations, time is critical. Currently, identifying whether a vehicle is electric or hybrid may require:
Checking registration details against databases
Visually identifying the vehicle model
With green licence plates, responders can instantly recognise an EV or PHEV at a glance, improving response time and potentially reducing risks to both rescue personnel and vehicle occupants.
This initiative is expected to contribute to safer handling of EV-related incidents, particularly as Singapore accelerates its transition towards cleaner mobility.
Public Consultation and Industry Feedback
Before full implementation, LTA and SCDF will conduct public and industry consultations to refine the proposal.
Starting from end-March 2026, the authorities will engage:
Authorised motor dealers
Selected signcraft workshops
Existing EV and PHEV owners
Feedback will be collected through focus group discussions and online surveys over a one-month period.
At present, there are no confirmed details on the final plate design, and the authorities may adjust the proposed formats based on stakeholder feedback.
What This Means for Singapore’s EV Adoption
The introduction of green registration plates reflects Singapore’s broader push towards electric vehicle adoption and road safety innovation.
As the number of EVs and PHEVs continues to rise, this move will:
Improve vehicle identification for enforcement and safety
Support emergency preparedness
Reinforce Singapore’s EV ecosystem development
For car buyers, especially those considering electric or plug-in hybrid models, this also represents a visible shift in how electrified vehicles are integrated into the local transport landscape.
